Leadership Pants

New Week – New Encouragement

My mother used to say, “We all put our pants on the same way: one leg at a time.”  It’s a reminder that to be brilliant at the basics, all you have to do is slide them on, zip them up, and don’t forget the button.  For leaders, if you forget basic details like how to treat people well, what your mission is, or what goals you must achieve, you are failing.  That failure isn’t critical any given day; however, collectively, it adds up. What you value is seen by others and impacts your success in the role.

When leaders start each day with an intentional “I” statement, spoken out loud, they challenged themselves to rise to what is happening on any given day.  For me, that statement is, “Who am I going to serve today and how can I make my small piece of the world a better place?”  It’s my “putting my pants on” moment as I start each day.  I may not feel like contributing when I get up, yet my actions override my feelings as I am setting myself up for success by establishing a habit that underpins my desire to be a leader of intentional impact.

As you start this week, establish some new habits, lean into the positive attributes that define you as a leader, and encourage others on your team to do the same. When we all start from a place of wanting to make a positive difference, we increase the chances that collectively we will secure some wins this week.   Put on your pants (leadership attributes) don’t forget the details (zipper and buttons) and stay brilliant at the basics.  We want our team to see us fully equipped to capture the success before us so remember that details matter and being brilliant is a choice we make daily.
